Why won't my compactor ram move?

It depends on what you hear. No sound at all points to power or a safety switch: check the breaker, the child lock or key, and that the drawer shuts fully. A hum with no movement points to a jammed drive or a failed motor; a motor that runs while the ram stays put means the drive has let go, such as a chain off its sprockets, a cracked gear or stripped power nuts. After a power cut, start one cycle; after a heavy load, leave the breaker off for about half an hour first. If that one try ends in a hum, grinding, a tripped breaker or no movement, switch the breaker off and call. Don't pry the ram or force the drawer, and keep your hands out from under the ram.

How much does compactor repair cost?

The price turns on which part failed. The technician tests the parts one at a time instead of guessing. A switch, a roller or a dry drive that needs cleaning and greasing is a smaller job than a drive gear, a set of power nuts or a motor. The diagnostic visit is $89 for a standard residential appliance and $129 for a built-in unit or commercial equipment; a premium brand on its own doesn't make an appliance built-in. After the diagnosis you hear what failed and what the repair costs, and nothing is repaired until you approve it.

Is replacement better than repair?

What can I check on a trash compactor before I call?

Check the breaker and any GFCI outlet, and that the key is pushed fully in and turned, or the knob is out of its lock position. Then switch the breaker off before your hands go into the drawer, wear gloves, since a full bag can hold broken glass, and clear any bag edge, bottle or debris in the rails. Use the bag size your manual lists: a bag of the wrong width can bunch and stop the drawer. Keep your hands out from under the ram, even with the power off. Shut the drawer fully, switch the breaker back on and start one cycle with your hands clear. If it still does nothing, the breaker or GFCI trips again, the motor only hums or you smell burning, leave the power off and call.
