What fails, and what to check first.
Oven won't heat or reach temperature.
Electric: a broken or blistered bake element, the temperature sensor, a control relay, or a 240-volt supply that has lost one side. Gas: an igniter that glows but is too weak to open the gas valve, or the valve.
Check first: on electric, with the breaker off and the oven cool, look for a break in an exposed bake element; on gas, check the range's breaker, since the igniter needs power.
Burners click but won't light.
Damp or misaligned caps, clogged burner ports, a cracked igniter or a weak spark module. A burner that keeps clicking once lit points to a wet switch or, on ranges that relight on their own, a wet electrode or an off-center cap. On a separate cooktop, see cooktop repair.
Check first: with the knobs and the range's breaker off and the burners cool, let a damp burner dry and reseat the cap flat.
Burned on one side, pale on the other.
A stopped convection fan, a failed element, a leaking gasket or a sensor that reads wrong; a dark pan or a crowded rack can do it too.
Check first: bake with one light-colored pan on the middle rack and see whether it still browns unevenly.
The door won't close or seal.
Worn hinges or springs, a torn gasket or a rack off its rails; the gap lets heat out and the front gets hot.
Self-clean won't start, or the door stays locked.
The door lock motor or switch, a sensor or the control. Self-clean runs hot and can open a thermal fuse, leaving the oven dead or locked.

What to know by brand.
- Pro-style ranges. Wolf burners carry two flames each, Viking adds a VariSimmer setting, and Thermador Star Burners relight on their own.
- Whirlpool family. Whirlpool, KitchenAid, Maytag and Jenn-Air share many designs; on KitchenAid Even-Heat true convection ovens, uneven baking points to the third element behind the fan, the fan or the sensor.
- GE family. GE, Café and Monogram come from GE Appliances; on GE ranges and wall ovens, F3 or F4 points to the oven temperature sensor circuit.
- Samsung and Frigidaire. On Samsung ranges, an SE code means a touch key is stuck or shorted; freestanding Frigidaire ranges have lift-off doors with hinge locks, so a crooked door after cleaning may only need reseating.
