A cooktop's fix depends on how it heats: ignition and gas flow on gas, elements and controls on radiant glass, the pan, power board and fan on induction.

A gas burner clicks but won't light.

A damp or misaligned cap, food in the burner ports, a cracked igniter or a weak spark module. If no burner sparks, check the power: the module runs on electricity. On a range, see oven & range repair.

Check first: with every knob off, the burner cool and the cooktop's breaker off, dry the burner and seat the cap flat; then restore power and try one burner at a time.

A zone won't heat.

Radiant glass: a burned-out element, its limiter or its control. Induction: a pan that isn't magnetic, or a power board or coil. Coil tops: a burned coil or terminal.

Check first: on induction, hold a magnet to the pan base; if it doesn't stick, the pan won't heat.

Sparking that won't stop, or arcing.

Clicking with the burner lit points to a wet burner switch or, on cooktops that relight on their own, a wet electrode or an off-center cap; a failing spark module comes next. Arcing at an element is a wiring, terminal or element fault: switch it off at the breaker.

Cracked glass.

Stop using it: spills can reach live parts through the crack, and heat can spread it. Repair means a new glass top, when one is made for your model, priced before any work.

Check first: switch it off at the breaker and keep liquids off the glass.

Controls won't respond.

A lock left on, a wet panel or a pan resting on the keys stops touch controls. If they stay dead, the control board or its power supply is next.

Check first: wipe the panel dry and turn off the control lock.

What to know by brand.
