A crack in a glass cooktop is more than a cosmetic problem. The glass-ceramic top on radiant and induction cooktops is the barrier between your cookware and the elements, wiring and electronics underneath, so a crack that runs through it can let liquid in, and it can grow as the glass heats and cools.

Cooktop Glass Cracked: common causes
- Impact — A dropped pot, lid, jar or cast-iron pan can chip or crack the glass, and the damage can start as a small chip at an edge.
- Overheating — A pan heated empty, or one left to boil dry, can overheat the glass and fuse to it, mark it or crack it.
- Melted sugar or plastic — Sugary spills and melted plastic can bond to hot glass and pull out small pits as they cool, which weakens the surface.
- Mounting stress — A cooktop that sits unevenly in its countertop cutout, or a clip or bracket that presses on the glass, keeps the top under constant stress.
- Grit and sharp objects — Sliding a pan with grit under it, or knocking a corner with something hard, leaves scratches and chips that a crack can grow from.
Signs to look for
- A line that won't come off with cooktop cleaner — A crack or a deep scratch, so keep the cooktop off until it is checked.
- Silvery or metallic marks that look like scratches — Residue from aluminum or copper pans, which a ceramic cooktop cleaner removes.
- Small pits or rough patches in the glass — Sugar or plastic that bonded to the surface and pulled out flakes of glass.
- A crack that is longer after cooking — Heat cycles are spreading it, so the cooktop should stay off until the top is replaced.
- Touch keys near the crack stop responding — The crack crosses the control area, or liquid has reached the electronics.
Checks you can do safely before you call
- Switch the cooktop off at the breaker. Do this before you clean, touch or inspect the glass, and wait until it is completely cool. On a gas cooktop with a glass top, keep every burner off as well.
- Clean the mark and look again, unless it is plainly a crack. With the breaker still off, put a little ceramic cooktop cleaner on a dry, soft cloth and rub the mark gently. Metal marks from pans and dried residue come off; a crack stays. Skip this step on an open crack, a chip or a raised edge, so no cleaner or water gets into it.
- Check the edges and corners. With the breaker still off, look along the frame and the edge of the glass, without running your fingers over it. A chip or a raised edge can turn into a crack.
- Keep liquids off. Don't cook on it, wipe it with a wet cloth or set wet pans on it until it has been checked, and don't seal the crack with glue or tape.
- Find the model number. On many cooktops the model and serial label is on the underside, visible from the cabinet below, or on the frame. Leave the breaker off while you look.
When to call a technician
- The line stays after cleaning, or it runs to an edge or a corner of the glass.
- The crack crosses a heating zone or the touch controls.
- Liquid has run into the crack or under the edge of the glass.
- The cooktop trips the breaker, beeps or shows an error since the damage.
- Part of the glass is chipped, loose or lifting at the frame.

Brand and model notes

Is it safe to use a cracked glass cooktop or stovetop?
No. Switch it off at the breaker and leave it off. A crack can let spills reach the elements and wiring under the glass, and heat from cooking can make the crack longer. Even a small crack away from the burners should be checked before the cooktop is used again.
Can cracked cooktop glass be replaced, or do I need a new cooktop?
On many models the glass can be replaced on its own or as a top assembly with its frame. Whether that makes sense depends on the model, the age of the cooktop and whether anything under the glass was damaged. The technician checks those points, prices the glass or top replacement, and tells you when a new cooktop would be the better choice.
How can I tell a crack from a scratch or a stain?
