Dishwasher Won't Start

A dishwasher that won't start points to power, the door latch, a control lock or the control board.

A dishwasher that won't start may stay completely dark, show its lights while every button goes unanswered, or click and hum without filling. Each of those points somewhere different, from the breaker or a wall switch to the door latch, a control lock or a delay start set by mistake.

Several of these take seconds to sort out at home, so try the checks below before you book. When the dishwasher still won't run, the technician tests power at the machine, the door switch, the thermal fuse and the control, then quotes the repair before anything is replaced.

Common causes

Dishwasher Won't Start: common causes

  • No power at the dishwasher — A tripped breaker or GFCI, a blown fuse, an unplugged cord or the wall switch by the sink that some kitchens wire to the dishwasher leaves it dead.
  • Door latch or door switch fault — The control won't start a cycle until the latch switch confirms the door is closed, and a worn latch or a failed switch keeps it waiting.
  • Control lock or delay start — A child lock blocks the buttons, and a delay start set by accident makes the dishwasher wait hours before it begins.
  • Failed control board or touchpad — A blown thermal fuse leaves the control dark, while a board with a burned relay or a touchpad that no longer registers presses leaves the lights on and nothing happening.
  • No water or a leak lockout — A closed supply valve, or a leak sensor that has found water in the base, stops the cycle before it gets going.
Symptoms

Signs to look for

  • The dishwasher won't turn on and the display stays dark — No power is reaching the dishwasher, from the breaker, a wall switch, the plug or the control's fuse.
  • Panel lights on, but no button responds — The door isn't latching, a control lock is on, or the touchpad has failed.
  • A countdown in hours on the display — Delay start is set, so cancel it and start again.
  • Clicking or humming for several minutes but no water coming in — The supply valve is closed, or the inlet valve isn't opening.
  • A lock symbol or a flashing light — The control lock is on, or the control is reporting a fault.

Checks you can do safely before you call

  1. Check the breaker, any GFCI and any wall switch. Look for a tripped breaker marked for the dishwasher or the kitchen and reset it once. Newer kitchens can protect the dishwasher with a GFCI breaker or a GFCI outlet under the sink; if yours has one, press its Reset button once. Some kitchens wire the dishwasher to a switch beside the disposal switch, so make sure it is on. When the breaker or the GFCI trips again, leave it off and call.
  2. Latch the door firmly. Push the door until the latch clicks; a rack or utensil sticking out keeps some latches from catching. Switch the breaker off before you look closely at the latch for a broken catch.
  3. Release the control lock and cancel delay start. Look for a padlock symbol or a lit Lock light, and find the button to hold in the owner's manual. Cancel any delay countdown, then press Start.
  4. Close the door after pressing Start. On models whose buttons sit along the top of the door, the cycle begins only after you press Start and close the door within a few seconds.
  5. Reset the control. Switch the dishwasher off at the breaker for a minute, then back on, to clear a control that has frozen.
  6. Open the water supply. Check that the dishwasher's shut-off valve under the sink is turned fully open, and don't force a stiff valve, because an old one can start leaking at the stem. A drip at the connection means closing that supply valve again and leaving the fitting for the technician.

When to call a technician

  • The breaker trips again after one reset, or you smell burning near the controls. Leave the breaker off until it is checked.
  • The display stays dark with the breaker on and the switch on.
  • The lights work but the buttons don't respond, or only some of them do.
  • The dishwasher clicks or hums but never fills or washes.
  • A leak code appears or water sits in the base; see dishwasher leaking.

What happens at the diagnostic visit

The technician confirms power at the dishwasher's junction box, then tests the door latch and switch, the thermal fuse, the touchpad and the control board, and checks whether a leak sensor or a stuck float is holding the cycle back. On models with a service mode, the stored fault codes are read too.

The diagnostic visit is $89 for a standard residential appliance and $129 for a built-in unit or commercial equipment; a premium brand on its own doesn't make an appliance built-in. Nothing is replaced until you've heard the price and agreed to it. Our dishwasher repair page lists the dishwasher brands we service.

Brand and model notes

  • Whirlpool, KitchenAid and Maytag: a dark control with power at the dishwasher can come from a blown thermal fuse at the control board. On some models the fuse is a separate part, and on others it is built into the board, where a blown fuse means a new board. See our Whirlpool, KitchenAid and Maytag pages.
  • GE, Café and Monogram: models with hidden controls along the top of the door start only after the door is closed, so press Start and shut the door promptly. See GE and Monogram.
  • Samsung and LG: a Samsung that shows 4C, or an LG that shows IE, isn't getting water, so check the supply valve under the sink first. See Samsung and LG.
  • Kenmore: these dishwashers were built by other manufacturers, and the three-digit prefix before the dot in the model number identifies the maker. Read the full number out when you book. See Kenmore.

FAQ

Dishwasher Won't Start: questions and answers

Why won't my dishwasher start when the lights are on?

Lights with no cycle point to a door that isn't latched, a control lock or a delay start, or a touchpad that no longer registers. Latch the door firmly, cancel any delay, release the lock, and reset the power at the breaker for a minute before you book a repair.

How do I reset a dishwasher that won't start?

Switch it off at the breaker, or unplug it, for about a minute, then restore the power and start a short cycle. Some models also have a cancel or reset step described in the owner's manual. A breaker that trips again should stay off until a technician checks it.

Why does my dishwasher hum but not start?

Each cycle starts with a short pump-out, so a brief hum is normal. A hum that goes on with no water coming in points to a closed supply valve or an inlet valve that isn't opening, and a hum with water in the tub but no wash points to the wash motor. Check that the valve under the sink is fully open, then have a technician check the parts.

Could a child lock stop my dishwasher from starting?

Yes. A control lock or child lock ignores every button except the one that releases it, and it can switch on by accident when someone wipes the panel. Look for a padlock symbol or a lit Lock light, and check the owner's manual for the button to hold.
