When a washer won't spin, the drum sits still or barely turns at the end of the cycle, and the clothes come out dripping and heavy. Some machines stop and show a code; others finish the cycle as if nothing went wrong.
A washing machine reaches full spin speed only once the water has drained, the lid or door has locked and the load sits evenly, so the fault can be in the drain, the lock, the drive or the control. Washer Not Spinning: common causes
- Off-balance or single heavy load — A bath mat, a comforter or wet towels bunched on one side make the control slow or cancel the spin to protect the suspension.
- Water still in the tub — The control won't spin a tub that hasn't drained, so a clogged pump filter, a kinked drain hose or a failed drain pump stops the spin too.
- Lid lock or door lock fault — The drum speeds up only after the control confirms the lid or door is closed and locked, so a broken striker, a worn lock, a failed lid switch on an older top-loader or a wiring fault holds it back.
- Worn drive belt or motor coupling — On belt-drive washers a stretched or snapped belt lets the motor run without turning the drum. Older direct-drive top-loaders join the motor to the transmission with a coupling that can strip.
- Shifter, clutch or transmission wear — Top-loaders change from washing to spinning through a shifter or clutch, and when it fails the agitator or wash plate moves but the basket stays put.
- Motor or motor control board — A failed drive motor, or the board that powers it, can leave the drum still while the fill and drain keep working.
Signs to look for
- Clothes come out dripping wet — The final spin was skipped or cut short, so look for water in the drum and an uneven load.
- The drum agitates but never spins — Water that hasn't drained, the lid lock or lid switch, the shifter or clutch on a top-loader, or a worn belt on a belt-drive model.
- A hum with no drum movement — A jammed drum or transmission, or a motor that can't start. A motor that runs freely while nothing turns points to a stripped coupling on an older direct-drive top-loader.
- The spin starts, slows down and stops — The control sensed an off-balance load or too many suds and cut the speed.
- A lock or drain code before the spin — The lid or door didn't lock, or the water didn't leave in time.
Checks you can do safely before you call
- Spread the load out. Cancel the cycle, wait for the lid or door to unlock, and unplug the washer before you reach in. A front-load door stays locked while water is inside, so never force it; go to step 2 instead. Untangle sheets and pair one heavy item with a couple of towels so the weight sits evenly.
- Look for water left in the drum. Standing water means the spin problem starts at the drain. With the washer unplugged and both supply valves shut, check the drain hose for kinks and follow the steps on our washer not draining page.
- Check the lid or door latch. With the power still off, look for a cracked or bent striker and anything caught in the latch opening. Never tape down or bypass a lid switch; it keeps hands out of a drum turning at full speed.
- Rinse out extra suds. Too much detergent, or regular detergent in an HE washer, leaves foam the control won't spin through. Keep the washer unplugged while you wipe suds from the door or lid area, then plug it back in and run a rinse with no detergent.
- Run Drain/Spin by itself. Reconnect the power and the water, then choose Drain/Spin or Rinse & Spin with a light load. Stay nearby, and stop the cycle and unplug the washer if you hear grinding or a loud bang.
When to call a technician
- The drum still won't spin with a small, even load and no water left inside.
- The motor hums, or you smell something hot, while the drum stays still. Unplug the washer and leave it off.
- The agitator moves but the basket never spins.
- You hear grinding or squealing from under the tub as the spin begins.
- The same lock or motor code comes back after the washer has been unplugged for a minute.
What happens at the diagnostic visit
The technician runs a spin cycle and watches what the motor, the drum and the lock do, reads any stored codes, and checks the belt or motor coupling, the lid lock or door lock, the shifter or clutch on top-loaders and the motor control board. If water is still in the tub, the drain gets checked first, since the spin depends on it.

Brand and model notes
- Samsung: UB or UE on the display means the load is off balance, and the washer won't reach full speed until it is spread out. - LG: UE is an unbalanced load, and LE means the direct-drive motor is locked or overloaded, which leads to the motor, its rotor position sensor or the wiring to the board. Start with LG washer repair, or browse LG.

Why does my washer fill and wash but not spin?
Washing and spinning lean on different parts. A washer that agitates normally but won't spin points to the drain, the lid or door lock, the shifter or clutch on a top-loader, or the belt on a belt-drive model. A small, even trial load rules out balance first.
Can I keep using a washer that won't spin?
More cycles won't fix it, and they can overheat a motor that hums against a stuck drum. Wring the clothes by hand or let them drip-dry, then unplug the washer, check the load and the drain, and book a visit if the drum still won't spin.
Why are my clothes still soaking wet after the cycle?
Soaked clothes mean the final spin was skipped or cut short. The control slows or cancels the spin for an off-balance load, too many suds or water that hasn't drained, so rule those out before suspecting the motor, the belt or the shifter.
Is a washer that won't spin worth repairing?
