A gas cooktop burner that won't ignite either clicks without catching a flame or makes no sound at all when you turn the knob. Both lead to the ignition side of the burner: the cap and burner head, the ports around them, the igniter electrode, the spark module that fires it, or the 120-volt supply the ignition runs on.

Cooktop Burners Won't Ignite: common causes
- Wet burner or igniter — Water from cleaning or a boil-over keeps the spark from lighting the gas, and the burner clicks without catching until everything dries.
- Misaligned burner cap — A cap that sits crooked or off its burner head blocks the path between the igniter and the gas, so the flame never starts.
- Clogged burner ports — Food, grease or cleaner residue in the ports near the igniter stops gas from reaching the spark.
- Cracked or dirty igniter electrode — A cracked porcelain insulator or a coated tip lets the spark jump to the wrong place, or leaves it too weak to light the burner.
- Failed spark module — The spark module fires the igniters, and on many cooktops one module serves every burner. When it fails, the burners it serves stop clicking, and a weak module gives faint clicks across several burners.
- No power to the ignition — Spark ignition runs on a 120-volt supply, so a tripped breaker or GFCI outlet, or a loose plug under the counter, stops the clicking on every burner.
Signs to look for
- Clicks but no flame on one burner — That burner is wet, its cap is out of position, its ports are clogged or its electrode is cracked.
- No click from any burner — The power to the cooktop or the spark module.
- Every burner clicks but none light — The spark works but gas isn't reaching the burners, so turn every knob off and call.
- The flame lights but dies when you let go of the knob — On cooktops with a flame-safety thermocouple the knob has to be held in for a few seconds, and a flame that still goes out points to the thermocouple or its valve.
- A faint orange spark instead of a sharp blue one — A dirty electrode or a failing spark module.
Checks you can do safely before you call
If you smell gas, stop: don't light or start the appliance or work any switch or plug, leave the home and call your gas utility or 911 from outside.
- Turn every burner knob off and let the cooktop cool. Keep the knobs off for each check, and leave the gas valves, the gas line and everything under the burners alone. When a burner clicks for more than a few seconds without lighting, turn it off and wait a few minutes before you try again.
- Dry the burner. With the knobs off, the burner cool and the cooktop's power switched off at the breaker or the plug, lift off the cap and the burner head where it comes off, let both dry completely, and wipe the igniter tip with a dry cloth.
- Clear the ports. With the knob off and the cap and head lifted off, open clogged ports in the burner head with a straightened paper clip or a stiff brush. Don't use a toothpick, which can snap off inside, and don't widen the openings. Never push anything into the small gas opening that the head sits over, and keep crumbs and water out of it.
- Seat the cap. With the knobs off, set the head and cap back so they sit flat and centered, lining up any notch or pin on the burner. A cap that rocks or sits high won't light.
- Check the power to the ignition. Switch the power back on, reset a tripped cooktop breaker or GFCI outlet once, then try a single burner. When no burner clicks at all, leave the cooktop off and call.
When to call a technician
- The burner still won't light after it has dried, been cleaned and sits correctly.
- No burner clicks, even with the breaker and outlet reset.
- Every burner clicks but none of them light.
- The igniter porcelain is cracked, or the spark jumps to the cooktop surface, a grate or anywhere other than its usual gap beside the burner ports.
- The flame lights but won't stay lit, or burns yellow or lifts away from the burner. Turn that knob off and leave the burner off until it has been checked.
What happens at the diagnostic visit
The technician checks the burner heads, caps and ports, tests each igniter electrode and its wire, measures the spark module and the burner switches, and confirms every burner lights and burns evenly from high to low. Any work on gas parts is done by the technician.

Brand and model notes
- Thermador: Star Burners have a five-pointed, star-shaped burner, and the cap has to sit level on it for the igniter to light the flame. See Thermador and our Thermador cooktop repair page.
- Wolf: dual-stacked sealed burners have an upper and a lower ring of ports. Both rings need to be dry and clear, with the cap seated, for the burner to light and hold a low simmer. See Wolf.

Cooktop Burners Won't Ignite: questions and answers
Why does my gas cooktop click but not light?
The spark is firing but the gas isn't catching. A wet burner after cleaning, a cap sitting crooked, or clogged ports are the things to rule out before anything else. Let the burner dry, clear the ports and seat the cap flat. When it still clicks without lighting, the igniter or the spark module needs testing.
Why do none of my cooktop burners click?
When no burner clicks, the ignition has no power or the spark module has failed. Check the breaker and any GFCI outlet that feeds the cooktop and reset it once. If the burners still don't click, keep the knobs off and have the module and its wiring tested.
Is a gas cooktop that won't light different from a gas range?
The burner ignition parts are the same on a gas range and a separate cooktop: caps, ports, electrodes and a spark module. What differs is how the appliance comes apart for testing, since a cooktop sits in the counter and is reached from above and from the cabinet below.
Can I clean the igniter myself?
Yes, with the knobs off, the cooktop cool and its power switched off at the breaker or the plug. Wipe the electrode tip with a dry cloth or a soft toothbrush and make sure the area around it is dry. Don't bend the electrode or scrape its porcelain, because a cracked insulator stops the spark reaching the burner.
