A careful cleaning clears a food smell. A smell that comes back within days, or one with a sewer edge to it, points to a slow leak, dirty water backing up from the dishwasher, or a drain problem. The checks below help you tell them apart.
Garbage Disposal Bad Smell: common causes
- Food stuck under the splash guard — The rubber flaps at the drain opening trap a film of food on their underside that running water never reaches.
- Residue in the grinding chamber — Grease and fine scraps coat the turntable and the grind ring when the disposal runs without enough water.
- Waste sitting in the drain trap — Ground food that never fully flushes settles in the trap or the discharge tube and rots there.
- Slow leak under the sink — Water seeping from a seal or a connection soaks the cabinet floor and smells musty rather than like food.
- Dishwasher drain water flowing back — Without a high loop or an air gap on the dishwasher drain hose, dirty water can run back and sit in the hose or the disposal.
- Drain or vent problem — A sewer smell that stays after cleaning points to the drain line or its venting rather than the disposal.
Signs to look for
- A rotten food smell at the drain opening — Residue is rotting under the splash guard or in the chamber.
- The smell returns a few days after cleaning — Waste is settling in the trap, the discharge tube or the dishwasher hose.
- A musty smell inside the sink cabinet — A slow leak is wetting the cabinet floor.
- Odor that gets worse after the dishwasher runs — Dirty water may be backing into the disposal through the drain hose, or the dishwasher filter needs cleaning.
- A sewage smell that cleaning doesn't change — Look past the disposal to the drain line or the vent.
Checks you can do safely before you call
- Make the disposal safe to clean. Turn it off at the wall and pull its plug under the sink. On a hardwired unit, shut off its breaker instead, before anything goes near the opening. Your hand never goes into the chamber.
- Clean the splash guard. With the power still off, lift it out where it is removable. Where it isn't, fold the flaps up with a long-handled brush and scrub the underside with dish soap.
- Scrub the chamber. With the power still off, work a long-handled dish brush and soapy water around the inside walls, then rinse.
- Grind ice and flush with cold water. With the power still off, drop a cup of ice cubes into the chamber. Then restore power, run cold water and switch the disposal on to knock residue off the grind ring. Keep the cold water running for half a minute after the grinding stops.
- Look under the sink. Cut the power again, then check for wet spots, a dripping joint or a swollen cabinet floor. Check that the dishwasher drain hose runs up to an air gap on the sink or counter, or at least loops up high under the counter.
When to call a technician
- The smell returns within days of a thorough cleaning.
- You find water under the sink or rust on the bottom of the disposal.
- Dirty water shows up in the sink or the disposal after the dishwasher drains.
A sewer smell that cleaning doesn't touch, or a sink that still drains slowly once the disposal runs clear, points to the drain or the vent, which sit outside the appliance and are a plumber's job.

Brand and model notes
- InSinkErator: the rubber sink baffle on current Badger and Evolution models pulls out of the opening for cleaning, and a torn one can be replaced on its own. On an older unit, check the manual before you pull on it.
- Appliance brand names: on a disposal labeled Frigidaire, GE or KitchenAid, the model number on the unit tells the technician which splash guard fits.
- Dishwashers that share the drain: a Whirlpool or other dishwasher draining into the disposal can carry odor of its own. Cleaning its filter alongside the disposal keeps one from masking the other.
