A garbage disposal that is not working at all does nothing when you hit the switch: no hum, no grinding, no sound. That quiet is a useful clue. A disposal that hums is getting power and is stuck, while one that makes no sound is not getting power, has shut itself off to protect the motor, or has a motor that has failed.
Start with the simple things below: the reset button under the unit, the outlet it plugs into, the breaker and the switch. When the disposal still won't run after those, a technician can check the switch, the wiring connection and the motor, and tell you whether a repair makes sense before any work starts.
Garbage Disposal Not Working: common causes
- Tripped reset button — The motor has a thermal overload that cuts the power when it overheats. A small button on the bottom of the unit pops out and stays out until someone presses it back in.
- No power at the outlet — Many disposals plug into an outlet under the sink. A loose plug, a tripped GFCI outlet or a tripped breaker leaves the unit completely dead.
- Worn wall switch or air switch — A wall switch can wear until it stops making contact. A countertop air-switch button works through a small air tube to a control box under the sink, and a cracked or loose tube, or an unplugged control box, means nothing happens when you press it.
- Batch-feed stopper not engaged — A batch-feed disposal runs only when its stopper is seated in the drain opening, and on many models turned to the on position. A worn or mismatched stopper makes the unit look dead.
- Loose wiring connection — On a hardwired unit, a loose wire under the disposal's electrical cover plate breaks the circuit, and a fault in the wall box or the building's wiring is an electrician's job. Neither is work for a homeowner.
- Burned-out motor — A motor that has overheated many times can stop for good, and pressing the reset button no longer brings it back.
Signs to look for
- No sound at all at the switch — Power isn't reaching the motor, so start with the reset button, the outlet and the breaker.
- The reset button has popped out — The overload tripped, which points to a recent jam or a motor that ran hot.
- It starts again but quits after a few seconds — The overload keeps cutting out, which points to a jam or a motor near the end of its life.
- Other outlets on the same circuit are dead too — This points to a tripped breaker or GFCI outlet, and when it trips again as the disposal starts, the disposal may be the cause.
- Nothing happens when you press the countertop button — This points to the air switch, its tube, or the control box under the sink and the outlet it plugs into.
Checks you can do safely before you call
- Switch it off at the wall before you reach under the sink. Then pull the disposal's plug from its outlet, or turn off its breaker when the unit is hardwired. Keep your hands out of the drain opening for every step here.
- Press the reset button. With the power still off, find the small button on the bottom of the unit. Give the motor several minutes to cool, then press it firmly until it clicks and stays in.
- Check the outlet and the breaker. Look for a GFCI outlet under the sink or on the kitchen counter that has tripped, and press its reset button. At the breaker box, reset a tripped breaker once. When it trips again, leave it off.
- Check the stopper on a batch-feed model. With the power still off, make sure the stopper is the one made for that disposal and that it seats fully, then turn it if your model works that way.
- Try it once. Plug it back in or restore the breaker, run cold water and turn the switch on, or engage the stopper on a batch-feed model. When it still makes no sound, switch it off and leave the wiring and the cover plate alone.
When to call a technician
- The reset button won't stay in, or it pops out again within a few uses.
- The breaker or GFCI outlet trips as soon as the disposal starts.
- You smell burning or see scorch marks near the bottom of the unit. Keep its breaker off and don't use it until it is checked.
- The outlet has power, but the disposal still makes no sound.
- The wall switch or countertop button does nothing at all.

The technician confirms that the outlet, breaker and switch deliver power, checks the overload protector and the wiring connection under the cover plate, and tests the motor. When the motor itself has failed, you hear that plainly, along with your options.

- InSinkErator: Badger and Evolution models have a red reset button on the bottom of the unit. InSinkErator also sells a countertop push button, the SinkTop Switch, which works through an air tube to a control box under the sink, and other makers sell similar air switches. Where is the reset button on a garbage disposal?
It sits on the bottom of the unit, under the sink, and on many models it is red. Switch the disposal off and cut its power at the plug or the breaker, give the motor several minutes to cool, then press the button until it clicks and stays in. When it pops out again soon after, the motor is overheating for a reason.
Can a bad wall switch stop a garbage disposal from working?
Yes. The wall switch carries the motor's full current, and a worn one can stop making contact. A technician can check whether power reaches the outlet with the switch on. Don't take the switch plate off and probe live wires yourself.
Is a garbage disposal that won't turn on worth repairing?
That depends on the cause. A tripped reset or GFCI outlet is something you can clear yourself, a worn wall switch is a small electrical fix, and a motor that has burned out points to replacing the disposal. The technician tells you which it is and gives you the price before any work.
Why does my disposal work only some of the time?
A disposal that cuts in and out points to a switch that is wearing out, a loose plug or wire, or a motor that overheats and trips its reset. Note when it stops, such as after a long run or a heavy load, and tell the technician.
