A jammed garbage disposal stops grinding partway through, leaves food and water standing in the sink, and may trip its reset button. Something in the grinding chamber or the drain just past it is holding things up, whether that's a single hard object or a mass of food that packed down.
The checks below help you clear the chamber without putting your hand in it, and tell a jam in the disposal from a clog further down the drain. Where the dishwasher drains through the disposal, a jam can also leave water standing in the dishwasher.
Garbage Disposal Jammed: common causes
- Hard object in the chamber — A bottle cap, large bone, fruit pit or utensil caught between the turntable and the grind ring stops the plate mid-turn.
- Fibrous scraps wrapped around the plate — Celery, corn husks, onion skins and artichoke leaves form strings that wind around the turntable lugs.
- Starchy food packed into a paste — Potato peels, rice and pasta swell with water and coffee grounds settle, packing the chamber or the pipe below it.
- Grease set in the drain line — Fat poured down the sink cools and coats the pipe past the disposal, so ground food builds up behind it.
- Too much waste fed at once — Filling the chamber before switching on, or grinding without enough cold water, overloads the motor and trips the reset.
- Worn grind ring or stiff lugs — A disposal has no blades. Swivel lugs on its spinning plate throw food against a fixed grind ring, and when those parts wear or stiffen, food clogs instead of clearing.
Signs to look for
- It stops mid-grind and goes quiet — The overload tripped because a jam stalled the motor.
- Food and water stay in the sink after grinding — The chamber or the drain pipe just past it is blocked.
- Water rises in the other sink bowl — The clog sits in the shared drain line below the disposal rather than in the chamber, which is plumbing work.
- Standing water in the dishwasher after a cycle — When the dishwasher drains through the disposal, the jam is blocking its path.
- A rattle or clatter that never clears — A hard object is loose in the chamber, or a lug or another part inside has broken.
Checks you can do safely before you call
- Shut off the power in two places. Switch the disposal off at the wall, then unplug it under the sink or turn off its breaker. Never reach into the chamber, even with the power off.
- Clear what you can see. Keep the power off, shine a flashlight into the opening and remove objects or packed food with tongs or needle-nose pliers.
- Free the plate. Still unpowered, and where the unit has a socket in the center of its underside, rock the plate with a hex wrench until it moves easily in both directions.
- Reset and try it. Wait a few minutes, press the reset button under the unit and restore power. Start a steady flow of cold water and switch the disposal on. When the water rises instead of draining, turn the water and the disposal off.
- Skip the chemicals. Don't pour chemical drain cleaner into a disposal. It can damage the unit and leaves caustic water standing where you or a technician will have to work. If you already poured some in, don't plunge the sink, and mention it when you book.
When to call a technician
- The plate won't move with the wrench, or there is no socket and it stays stuck.
- The reset trips again soon after you clear the jam.
- Glass or metal broke inside the chamber.
- The dishwasher still holds water after the disposal runs clear.
When the disposal grinds freely but the sink still won't drain, that points to a clog in the drain line past the disposal, which is a job for a plumber.

The technician clears the chamber, inspects the swivel lugs and grind ring for wear or breakage, takes off the discharge tube to look for packed waste, and runs the motor under load. The dishwasher's drain into the disposal is checked too.

Brand and model notes
- Dishwasher connection: a Whirlpool, KitchenAid or other dishwasher that drains through the disposal joins it at the inlet on the side of the unit. Clear the disposal before troubleshooting the dishwasher.
- New disposals: a replacement unit comes with a knockout plug inside its dishwasher inlet. When the dishwasher stopped draining right after a disposal was replaced, that plug may still be in place.
- InSinkErator: Evolution models add extra grind stages for tougher scraps, but clam or oyster shells, large bones and utensils can still jam them. A GE Disposall gets the same power-off steps.

How do I unjam a garbage disposal without putting my hand in it?
Switch it off and unplug it, then lift out what you can see with tongs. Where the unit has a socket underneath, turn the plate from below with the hex wrench that fits it, rocking it until it moves freely. Press the reset button, restore power, start cold water and switch it on, then turn both off when the water rises instead of draining.
What foods jam a garbage disposal?
Fibrous scraps such as celery, corn husks and onion skins, starchy ones such as potato peels, rice and pasta, plus fruit pits, large bones and clam or oyster shells. Grease clogs the drain past it. Feed small amounts with cold water running, and put the tough scraps in the trash instead.
Can a jammed disposal stop my dishwasher from draining?
Yes, when the dishwasher drains through the disposal. Its drain hose connects to the side of the unit, so packed food in the chamber or the discharge tube blocks its water too. Clear the disposal and run it with cold water, then run a short dishwasher cycle to see whether it drains.
Should I use a chemical drain cleaner on a jammed disposal?
No. Chemical drain cleaners can damage the disposal's parts and seals, and they leave caustic water in the sink and the chamber where someone has to work next. Clear the jam with hand tools and the power off instead. If you already poured one in, don't plunge the sink, and tell the technician when you book.
