A garbage disposal humming but not working has power reaching the motor, yet the motor can't turn. You hear a steady hum or buzz when the switch goes on, nothing grinds, and the water just sits in the sink.
A jammed object, packed food, or rust and dried residue left after the unit sat unused can hold the turntable still, and a motor with a failed start circuit hums the same way. Don't leave it humming. A locked motor heats up quickly and trips its reset, and repeated tries can burn it out. Switch it off, then work through the checks below.
Garbage Disposal Humming: common causes
- Object wedged in the grinding chamber — A bottle cap, fruit pit or piece of cutlery can lodge between the turntable lugs and the grind ring and lock the motor.
- Packed fibrous or starchy waste — Celery strings, peels or rice can pack tightly around the turntable until the motor can't start against them.
- Rust after a long idle spell — A disposal left unused for a long stretch can seize as rust and dried residue bind the turntable to the grind ring, so it hums the next time someone switches it on.
- Broken impeller lug — A swivel lug on the turntable can break loose and wedge against the grind ring, locking the plate.
- Motor start fault — When the plate turns freely with the hex wrench and the motor still only hums, the fault is in the motor or its start circuit.
Signs to look for
- A steady hum with no grinding — The motor has power but the turntable is locked, so look for a jam first.
- The hum stops after a few seconds and the button pops — The thermal overload tripped because the locked motor overheated.
- The breaker trips while it hums — A locked motor draws heavy current, which points to a hard jam or a failing motor.
- The plate turns freely with the hex wrench but the hum stays — The jam is gone, so the motor or its start circuit has failed.
- It hums after a long spell without use — Rust or dried residue on the plate is holding it rather than food.
Checks you can do safely before you call
- Cut the power within a few seconds of hearing the hum. Turn the wall switch off, then unplug the unit under the sink or switch off the breaker that feeds it. Every step below is done with the disposal unpowered.
- Look into the chamber with a flashlight. Never put your hand inside. When you can see an object, lift it out with tongs or long pliers.
- Turn the plate from below. With the power still off, find the hex socket in the center of the underside, fit the matching wrench and work it back and forth until it turns a full circle freely. On a model without a socket, follow the freeing steps in its manual.
- Press the reset button. Keep the power off and let the motor cool for a few minutes, then press the button under the unit until it stays in.
- Restore power and try it with cold water running. When it still hums, switch it off and stop there, because each extra try heats the motor again.
When to call a technician
- The plate won't budge even with the hex wrench.
- The plate turns freely with the hex wrench, yet the motor still hums.
- The reset button pops out after one or two short runs.
- The breaker trips each time the disposal starts.
- Water has backed up in the sink and won't drain past the jam.

Brand and model notes
- InSinkErator: Badger and Evolution models take a 1/4-inch hex wrench in the socket at the center of the bottom. InSinkErator supplies one for it, the Jam-Buster wrench, and an ordinary 1/4-inch Allen key fits the same socket.
- Waste King: a Waste King humming but not working gets the same power-off checks. Switch it off and cut its power, look on the bottom for its reset button and, where the model has one, a wrench socket, and follow the manual for that model to free the plate. When the plate turns freely and it still hums, stop and call.
- GE and KitchenAid: a disposal sold under the GE or KitchenAid name follows the same power-off checks. Have the model number from its label ready when you book.

Why does my garbage disposal hum but not spin?
Power is reaching the motor, but the plate won't turn. An object or packed food is wedged against the grind ring, rust or dried residue has bound the plate after a long idle spell, or the motor's start circuit has failed. Switch it off within a few seconds so the motor doesn't overheat.
Can I fix a humming garbage disposal myself?
You can clear a simple jam. With the switch off and the unit unplugged, remove what you can see using tongs, turn the plate with the hex wrench under the unit, then press the reset button. When it still hums after that, the motor needs a technician.
Is it dangerous to leave a disposal humming?
It is hard on the motor. A locked motor draws heavy current and heats up fast, which trips the overload and, after repeated tries, can burn out the windings. Turn it off, cut the power and clear the jam before you try again.
What if there is no hex socket under my disposal?
Not every model has one. Check the manual for your model, which shows how to free the plate on that unit. Keep the power off the whole time, and never reach into the chamber with your hand.
