On a compressor model, some sounds are part of normal running: a soft hum from the compressor, a click as it starts and stops, and a gurgle as refrigerant moves through the tubing.

- Fan motor wearing out — A condenser or interior fan with dry bearings squeals or grinds, and a blade catching frost, a wire or debris makes a ticking or scraping sound.
- Compressor struggling to start — A loud buzz from the base followed by a click, repeating while the cabinet warms, is a compressor failing to start, which a technician traces to the start components, the overload protector or the compressor. - Ticking or scraping from inside the cabinet — A fan blade is catching frost or something behind the rear panel.
- Rattle that stops when you press on the side of the cooler — The cabinet is touching something, or the feet need leveling.
- Repeated click from the base and a warming cabinet — The overload protector is shutting down a compressor that can't get started.
- Deep hum louder than it used to be — The compressor is working harder, which can follow a dusty condenser or blocked vents.
